Why Work Events Are A Good Way To Stand Out

I believe that work events are great milestones for me to show that I bring more to the table at my job. Around the sales floor, around the office, or when you accept and finish assignments behind a computer you are showing your everyday skills. Skills that your co-workers as well as supervisors already know you have. You do it to have a persistent work flow, you’ve become habitual with your pattern, and it’s less stressful to not thinking about how creative you can be every single day. I look at work events as the few days that I will show something different. There are a few reasons why I try to stand out at work: to get a promotion, impress a co-worker, out-do a competitor, prove to myself that I can contribute more, to enhance the skills I already have, or the simple urge to try something new to make my day that much more exciting.  Believe it or not I’ve done it all and have been successful. Pre-sale pitches were fun, before we hit the streets for door-to-door sales we practice pitched, the night and morning prior to this traditional event I sometimes scouted out who I wanted to work with, knowing their reactions enabled me to tailor my response and approach almost perfectly. This in turn impressed a few friendly faces I wanted to know better as the new guy and it made my boss assign me to a better territory. When there were incentives to having the most sales in the week, like a trip to the movies and free dinner on my boss then I slept early, and went to work with the most energy to win. I’ve won, but I’ve lost as well, but my attempt to stand out made my teammates aware that I can contribute more than I had been before, So I began training! This is like a promotion for me, because I love working with people younger or new, I love to give advice and my initiative got me to that place. But the best way to stand out, doing something you normally wouldn’t do, is in the planning stages of an event. I would show off how great my copywriting skills were by coming up with lines for ads, I sent emails that were draped with hospitality that no-one knew I possessed in a cut-throat field. At the event, I showed leadership qualities by knowing what everyone was supposed to be doing, not only myself, and checking in as if I created the whole thing. Being proactive at work and at work events will put you where you want to be.
