Opening Ceremony Ă¢€˜BuyerĂ¢€™ Kate Foley

Opening Ceremony opened up its second store location in New York at the Ace Hotel only 3 years ago. They have two other shops in Tokyo and Los Angeles and are known today to be extremely innovative and ideal to work for. Kate Foley who is a major influence on the Opening Ceremony staff shared much insight as to her experience with the company and here chase for her passions in a past interview. Kate’s career title is “buyer” (a buyer audits sales, handles orders via email, Excel, and more) she landed this position by applying like an everyday person, but for a unique and refined position---at the time Opening Ceremony had one buyer managing too many things at once, thus opening a door for Kate to ease the work load. It’s safe to say that your dream job may need you just as much as you need them so it’s worth the shot to fill out an application. In her career at Opening Ceremony, not only was is she required to work, but she benefits from learning a few things in the experience; her sense of style went from color-concerned to taking more risks, having more fun, and staying away from dull colors. As far as the work day goes, she works an upbeat pace, with back to back appointments and supervisory duties with inventory making small orders, or reorders and constantly communicating with designers, which there are 450 that she has to work with. Buyers have special positions, where her inspirations really affect her buying decisions, different cultures, street-life, high-end and low-end looks, but the key with Opening Ceremony is to not concentrate on buying into trends. She expressed that during fashion week, it’s the double the work, double the pace visiting different showrooms. She mentions that her mentor was Carol Song, and that her best advice was for Kate to go with her instincts in making decisions on what to buy. Also, thatentry level salary is very much basic, and the work is demanding… But if you’re lucky like her, it will only be an honor to work with such a phenomenal store, a store that carried a brand called Marques’ Almeida and was one of the first two stores in the world to have it. Hearing from an actual employee will give you a better perspective on how to get the job, what the job will be like, and how to keep the job once you’ve landed it. I hope her story has inspired you.
