I believe the most strategic way for you to score a job in the fashion industry is to look up the company directory/staff for the business you’d like to work for and find those individuals on social media sites. Why? Because you are maneuvering around limitations. With job applications you are restricted to contacting human resources, or the actual manager/supervisor/CEO that will hand pick their staff. You’re experience, your personality, your characteristics, and your skills are all on one piece of paper or a stack of work samples. I do not believe paper is enough; I like to incorporate many things into pitching myself. Presentations, verbal communication, body language, personal stories. Yes, you may be able to do this once you land the interview, but the secret is, these are the things that will get you the interview as well. So once you’ve found a directory of employees, what’s next? You pick out people who relate to you, career wise, or have personal profiles that you personally can relate too. Ask yourself questions for example: Based on this person’s profile and job duty, is she alone in her team and very unique? Maybe I could ease their workload. Does this person have dreams, aspirations that they’d like to bring to the company, things that I believe in as well? Once you’ve narrowed it down, you’re wondering what to say in a message. Well, you get straight to the point; your introduction is your uniqueness in contacting them through their social media, that part is settled. Explain how you can help them or the company out, ask to be referred, ask for them to show your samples to management, or ask for tips on how to get the job. Here’s a chance where you can email a personalized presentation to an employee describing why you wanted to contact them in hope for a referral. Here’s an opportunity to land an interview even when the job is not hiring at the moment—and that is the biggest reason to social network. A lot of positions need to be filled; management just hasn’t had the time to post ads or interview people. So if you come to them, you become a top candidate. I personally have become friends with not only employees who work at the jobs I was seeking, but I also keep in contact with the employers who hire them. You have to remember employers have worked very hard to get where they are, they are constantly being innovative, for you to show something different, really hits a homerun for them and they are reminded of their younger ambitious self’s chasing success just as you are. It’s always a win win, I’ve never failed to be satisfied after taking job hunting to social media. I come out of it with friends, tips, referrals for other jobs as well, and jobs.
