Sticking With an Interest for a Little, Can Be Big For You!

What do internships, volunteer positions, and workshops all have in common? You know this, spending a little time in each will help you gain experience right. In the Fashion world where so many careers are similar, intermediate experience in various categories will help you in your job search.  You have to stick with it for two reasons. First off, you’re not going to learn anything after two weeks that will really make you an expert, so don’t sell yourself short. Secondly, employers won’t feel that you can compete with other candidates if they find out how little time you put into learning your craft. So persevere with an interest for about 3-6 months. This gives you enough time to make mistakes and learn from them. To experience different paces of operation (a rushed schedule, rush hour, 30 minutes to prepare for something that is unexpected—whatever it may be). You have time to build repertoire, to get into a habitual authentic work flow of your own, and to pick up fashion as your first language. If you really focus on sponging everything you can in the time you spend gaining experience with multiple positions such as: fashion designer apprentice, sales associate, or a hair-styling workshop, then you will be a fashion-maestro in a sense of having multiple skill sets.

I know it isn’t easy; writers tend to state an order of operations and not take account to how hard it may be. But we have to make sure you do this right, so make sure you set goals. You know that you want to learn the ins and outs, but what more can you learn? Take notes and do your homework after every shift, so that you retain information longer and so that you have something to look back at in the future. Not only do you want to learn but you want to have the opportunity to come back and learn some more, so network and build a relationship, announce your goals so everyone can help you.  This isn’t a job, this is exercise, so go in well fed, so that you’re not distracted by your stomach’s calling, push yourself to your limits and really let your mind and body feel the experience take over. Plan your days accordingly and make time for constructive criticism, homework I can’t state enough proper motivation such as: interviews from famous people in the field, magazine articles, and biographies—you have to want to go. And finally, make time for fun and relaxation so that you stay grounded, friends and family support will keep you on the right track to becoming the great person you are striving to be.
