20th Jun, 2013Journals will reveal your true life story. Because a person’s life isn’t only what they’ve done, it’s what they’ve thought as well. The story of my life is depicted with vivid imagination. I used my journal to harness my craft as a screenwriter. I reported every-day scenarios with details that made the words come to life. I vent my thoughts on the world, my own journal entries and I’ve written endless amounts of ideas. When I look back at my journal I really travel back in time to see where my head was, and it tells me the person I was and wanted to become---I became everything I sought out to be. I appreciated my journal because it is your paperback friend, it reminded me that I had dreams, and motivated me to pick up with a new entry. When it comes to expressing yourself in a journal, I think it comes much easier. The advantage is that you get into this groove of communicating your inner thoughts; it’s therapeutic because it’s just like speaking to your best friend—but without second thinking. That’s where we cut off our imagination or our true feelings, when we second think and consider what the person we are talking to is going to think we omit, run-around and by-pass certain things we really want to get off our chests. At least this is how I perceive writing in my journal. There is much power in what looks so casual. When I really look close at anyone writing in their journals (now a days, their journals are their phones) I notice how attentive, and creative, and emotional they are. I can always tell if it’s a text or a memo—because we share the same love for our notepads. My journal has gotten me through writer’s block, relationship confusions, and much more, meanwhile, helping me grow as a person as I learned from my life stories. All of my best ideas don’t come from group sessions where we writers toss ideas, stretch, shape and contemplate where we can go with concepts. No, they always have, and always will come out when I touch pen to pad, finger to touchscreen, or fingertips to keyboards. If you can relate then I admire your dedication to exploring yourself, for those who’ve never touched nor seen a journal/diary before I highly recommend starting with a piece of paper, one line, talk about how your day went and see how it feels.
