College isn’t for everybody, so isn’t working, or parenting, but we realize that some things pay off and are essential. You shouldn’t see choice when you think college; you should feel obligated to pursuing a degree in fashion. Think strategically, it is common knowledge that he/she who holds the degree trumps over everyone else—for the most part. If you are aware that employers seek out degree holders then go to college get a degree and never compete again! Get paid more than everyone around you, and never feel like you wasted your time because every day you will be living this earned yuppie lifestyle. The biggest concern is wasted money and wasted time. Cross off the wasted money portion, because you will make it all back and then some. Time, is a tricky factor, here is where you have to come up with a stratagem.
Most want to jump into their careers fast and early, do what they love, and make big bucks while being young to enjoy it. They benefit by building a massive amount of contacts from starting early and they actually gain a great deal of experience from entry level positions and internships. So you can avoid college and pitch your sharpest and most creative concepts to employers at interviews and work hard and thoughtful to convey your expertise. Anyone can make it, if you have the guts to show this much passion, but you may feel exhausted doing so. In some cases, you don’t even get the position; you get a rejection speech or letter that tells you that other candidates with degrees suit the position better. There is no difference between someone without a degree and someone with. Both of you put sweat and tears into learning your craft, you do it in a library and at workshops; they do it in a classroom. It might seem like you will have more free time and save money by not going to college but by comparison that may not be the case.
Attend college against your will and adjust your life. You know the outcome is beneficial but now you have to get through it. You can kill two birds with one stone by attending college. You can get the degree that guarantee’s your future as well as acquiring everything you would have gotten from jumping into your career early. It’s a matter of outlook and perspective. In college you will have to support yourself by means of: food, beverage, social life, laundry, etc. Put your plan in motion and get a job that is fashion related. You don’t have to have a degree to be a sales associate at H&M. But, by working at H&M you will learn so much and tack on experience points for your resume. Further on down the road you will sit down in an interview and pitch your sharpest and most creative concepts to employers and work hard and thoughtful to convey your expertise, and you will be heard. You will have ranked higher, but have done the same, as the person outside in the waiting room without a degree—as a result of partying on the weekends, working hard in the afternoon on weekdays, while attending 3 morning classes a week you will get the job. The work is equivalent, the benefits are different. You may know it all, and be the best, but on paper a degree will be your best friend or your worst enemy. Life really is what you make it, so make college work, you will travel down the same path as if you hadn’t attended but interview day will be judgment day.
