Pattern makers are critical to the fashion design industry. They are responsible for taking a fashion designer’s drawing  and creating a pattern on paper before going on to fabric. Enroll in some drafting classes and as most patterns are made on a computer, you might want to learn CAD. Find a job as an apprentice with a veteran pattern maker who is willing to teach you the ropes. If you already have experience then you’ll want to create your own portfolio of samples and bring them with you to the interview. With little or no experience you might want to start out as a fabric cutter or grader so you can learn as you go.
