Communications Project Manager

Arts & Business Council of Chicago

Status: Contract Position, approximately 40-50 hours per month. Starting September 11, 2023, thru July 31, 2024

Location: Remote. Candidate must be based in Chicago.

Communications Project Manager Opportunity

We are looking for a Communications Project Manager to join our team. This opportunity is a 10+ month contract position that requires approximately 40-50 hours of work per month.

The Communications Project Manager will be responsible for strategic and integrated marketing programs to help drive revenue and build brand awareness among A&BC's target audiences, including art makers, creative entrepreneurs, arts organizations, funders, and corporate sponsors.

The ideal candidate is:
• An excellent communicator who can give honest and constructive feedback
• A passionate storyteller who uplifts diverse voices, backgrounds, and experiences
• Able to utilize social media and other technology practices that are accessible and inclusive
• Familiar with the nonprofit, arts, and business ecosystems in Chicago.

The person in this role will work remotely and report to the Director of Programs. They will maintain regular communication with the Director, who is responsible for effectively sharing annual programming, upcoming events, pertinent details, and any other information with you.

OBJECTIVES FOR THE ROLE

• Create communications strategies through an intersectional equity lens
• Develop A&BC’s brand awareness through social media channels, including LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook
• Develop audience outreach, development, and conversion strategies to increase fundraising and other partnerships

HOW TO MEET THE OBJECTIVES

Develop Communications Strategies through an Equity Lens

• In collaboration with the Executive Director and Director of Programs, build A&BC’s brand by identifying its voice in alignment with institutional vision, mission, and values
• Develop strategies for audience outreach, engagement, retention, and conversion across the target audiences we have already identified
• Review existing brand guidelines and provide feedback and ideas for improvements
• Create annual communications calendar with Executive Director and Director of Programs

Social Media Planning, Management, and Monitoring

• Review existing materials and identify inspiration for communications sources
• Analyze current performance analytics on social media and identify actionable steps to improve them
• Design strategy and content calendar for Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook, including images, infographics, narratives, and other relevant materials
• Monitor performance of social media, respond to messages and other forms of engagement, and report on activity biweekly to Director of Programs

Design, launch, and monitor paid ads, including budget and strategies


ROLE ROADMAP

3 Months (September - November 2023)

In the first three months this role will focus on fully onboarding into A&BC; during the first month becoming familiar with our programs, mission, audiences, and social media channels; starting the second month creating a communications strategy in collaboration with the Director of Programs and soft managing social media.
1) Getting Familiar with A&BC (September)

• Become familiar with institutional goals, programming calendar, arts partners and target audiences, social media channels, and A&BC’s mission, vision, values, and equity statement
• Work in close collaboration with the Director of Programs who will share details about programming, upcoming events, and organizational goals as outlined in our Strategic Plan and Impact Report
• Review and suggest improvements to institutional marketing materials, graphic design resources, and brand identity
• Start envisioning the foundations for the Communications Strategy Plan by actively taking notes on current institutional knowledge, social media performance (Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn), and audience engagement

2) Development of a living Communications Strategy Plan (October and November)

• Identify marketing and volunteer recruitment opportunities with current arts partners and external organizations
• Set and track measurable goals, and report on progress through biweekly KPI reporting that's shared with Director of Programs and Executive Director
• Research inclusive and accessible communications practices and transform findings into actionable steps that can inform how we deliver inclusive communications across all social platforms – including best practices on how to efficiently navigate challenging external events
• Develop a social content strategy, campaigns, and calendar for 2023 and 2024 that highlights key messaging and year-round storytelling
• Soft management of A&BC’s Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn accounts by focusing on exclusively advertising upcoming events for 2023 and 2024

7 Months (December - July 2024)

After the first three months, the role will involve proactively managing our communications strategy and social media platforms and carry on with assigned responsibilities including:

- Proactively managing social platforms and delivering communications goals as stated on the strategies developed during first three months
- Perform an audit of our social platforms to ensure internal goals are being met
- Attend bi-weekly meetings with Director of Programs to report on metrics, provide/receive feedback, and touch base on upcoming milestones and goals
- Constantly review and strengthen the Communications Strategy Plan by analyzing and integrating feedback and findings from social media data and ongoing conversations with A&BC staff

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Teamwork and Collaboration

• Willingness to provide honest and effective feedback about communications strategies and performance.
• Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while also working cooperatively with A&BC staff.

Strong Interpersonal and Communications Skills

• Passion for storytelling and narrative building with the proven ability to craft compelling narratives that engage and inspire diverse audiences.
• Cross-cultural sensitivity and commitment to equity and inclusion.

Proficiency in Content Creation, Graphic Design, and Social Media

• Minimum 3 years of previous experience working as a communications manager, including social media responsibilities such as media performance metrics, scheduling, monitoring, and engagement tools.
• Ability to gather insights and leverage data to inform storytelling decisions that foster meaningful connections with diverse stakeholders.
• Experience with graphic design programs, including Photoshop, InDesign, and/or Illustrator.
• Knowledge and understanding of the current social media landscape, trends, and best practices.
• Experience with content strategy and social campaigns at nonprofits, museums or other cultural institutions.

Project Management

• Self-starter with project management skills, including time management, tracking, task prioritization, and an ability to meet deadlines.
• Strong project management skills with a focus on delivering measurable outcomes.
• Ability to set goals, develop key performance indicators, and track the effectiveness of communications initiatives in achieving desired results.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Compensation: Hourly rate $23
