***CALLING ALL ARTISTS/PERFORMERS LOOKING FOR A NEW OPPORTUNITY!****
****** is a charity based out of NYC serving hundreds of students each year from communities of the highest need. Our students typically come from families with an average income of less than $12,000, living well below the poverty line. Along with financial insecurity, our students often face hardships such as homelessness, hunger, and violence. Through our holistic approach we help students reach their full potential and pursue higher education.
We strongly believe in the power of the arts and general life experiences as crucial learning opportunities. Our Broadening Horizons pillar exposes students to new experiences, environments, careers, people, and cultures. We are seeking to recruit individuals with an arts background, either ex-performers, creators or otherwise to help build on the experiences we provide and build out our emerging arts strand within the Broadening Horizons Pillar. In the time of a global pandemic, we have relied a lot on virtual programming; highlights last Fall include regular movie nights and play screenings, the establishment of a ‘Hamilton’ program in which students produced their own songs or poems based on the cult musical, and a play-reading group whereby students read and discussed their responses to selected texts. In person opportunities included trips to museums where possible and visits to arts companies putting on socially distant performances.
We recognize that the global pandemic has affected everyone’s lives and that some individuals in the arts industry may be taking advantage of a “gap year” to build their skills and experiences in a different capacity. We also recognize that artists may want to embark on new ventures in this time of uncertainty but are perhaps lacking the work experience needed to transition into an office-based setting. ******’s Post Arts Fellowships provide an opportunity to do just that, either remotely or on-the-ground in our socially distanced New York office. Our Post Arts Fellowships are open to any individuals with a previous background in the arts looking to gain work experience and add to our student’s cultural enrichment. We ask that Fellows commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week with ******, however, we are flexible about how this is distributed around the Fellow’s other commitments.
****** is currently recruiting Spring 2021 Post Arts Fellows who will lead specific projects to support our students’ development and organizational growth.
Main responsibilities include:
Developing a calendar of events for students in the field of the ‘arts’ – spanning music, performance and visual art.
Identifying new ways in which to incorporate the arts into virtual or in-person Broadening Horizons events through the establishment of new elective classes and programs.
COVID permitting, to contribute to setting and delivering a formal in-person theatre curriculum for selected students to participate in each week throughout Spring 2021. This course should culminate in an in-house performance of a selected text or devised piece of work.
Building new partnerships between ****** and Arts Organisations we have not previously been connected with but also in helping strengthen current links.
Increasing student’s engagement with the arts and culture around them through weekly Broadening Horizon discussion sessions, developing their ability to critically respond to visual and performance art.
Prepare “Broadening Horizons” worksheets for students based on music and the arts and other topics of interest.
If interested in this position, please send a cover letter detailing how your background, skills and experience may be a good match for this particular role. Please also enclose a CV (don’t worry if this is mainly theatrical at this stage).
All CV’s and cover letters should be sent to ***join for full access*** by 9am (EST) December 1st 2020.
